Philosophy of Christian Education:
Every Christian’s Responsibility
In last summer’s “Get-to-Know-Dr. Sutton” series, we released a piece about his approach to Christian higher education and featured two points of his 12-point educational philosophy. This semester we will highlight the other ten principles that Dr. Sutton believes should drive Christian education at the classroom level.
Dr. Sutton’s seventh principle for Christian education is that Christian educators should underscore the important social role of learning. He says, “Knowledge—especially biblical knowledge—is to be passed from one generation to the next, and biblical knowledge should inform all of one’s life, including one’s social life. The Christian educator should embrace his or her role in transforming and protecting the community and the larger society. By educating individuals, the Christian educator seeks to transform communities. In addition, the Christian educator seeks to protect communities by articulating the blessings of obedience to God and the ramifications of disobedience. The Christian educator also protects communities by equipping them to counter falsehoods.”
