President Sutton’s 10th Principle

Philosophy of Christian Education:

Every Christian’s Responsibility

In last summer’s “Get-to-Know-Dr. Sutton” series, we released a piece about his approach to Christian higher education and featured two points of his 12-point educational philosophy. This semester we will highlight the other ten principles that Dr. Sutton believes should drive Christian education at the classroom level.

Dr. Sutton’s tenth principle for Christian education is that the Christian educator should exhort students to embrace three fundamental roles that they have in the educational process.

He says, “Students should (1) value education because of its role in the sanctification process and because it better prepares them to serve God on earth, (2) actively engage with educational content, and (3) desire growth and maturity. Because students may not always see the connection between formal education and their development as God’s children— and because they may sometimes need motivation to engage with content—the Christian educator should enthusiastically communicate these three student responsibilities early in an educational experience and periodically throughout it.”
