President Sutton’s 8th Principle

Philosophy of Christian Education:

Every Christian’s Responsibility

In last summer’s “Get-to-Know-Dr. Sutton” series, we released a piece about his approach to Christian higher education and featured two points of his 12-point educational philosophy. This semester we will highlight the other ten principles that Dr. Sutton believes should drive Christian education at the classroom level.

Dr. Sutton’s seventh principle of Christian education was that Christian educators should underscore the important social role of learning. His eighth principle is that the Christian educator should seek to transform and protect individuals.

Of this principle, Dr. Sutton says, “The Christian educator should acknowledge the close relationship between education and the sanctification process, for doing so underscores the gravitas of the educator’s role in the student’s life and in the kingdom of God. Transformation of the individual involves teaching that is directed toward mind, heart, and behavior. Just as the Christian educator seeks to protect and equip communities, he or she also seeks to protect individuals by communicating biblical truth about obedience and disobedience to God and by equipping those individuals to challenge falsehoods and discern truth.”
